Remembering Drucilla Cortell Gensler

Members of The Initiative’s Board of Directors and Advisory Board were in attendance at the September 7th Celebration of Life for Drucilla (Drue) Cortell Gensler (1936 – 2017) , founding member of The Initiative, held at the Presidio in San Francisco. Executive Director Christian Wistehuff and alumna Nadia Sakhi (Roger Williams 2010) offered moving personal tributes and expressions of gratitude on behalf of our students, alumnae and the women and men of Afghanistan our program participants have touched through their own service. Christian shared news of a special tribute from our Board of Directors and Advisory Board: a community green space bearing Drue’s name will be built with 99 fruit trees in Kabul – one for each alumna and student of The Initiative – which will serve as a safe place for women and children to gather and a local source of clean water, food, and modest source of income. We are grateful for the love and financial support The Initiative has received from Drue’s family, friends and colleagues in her honor and will continue her great work on behalf of Afghan women guided by her example of love and generosity.

“Drue is in heaven now. And she’s definitely making changes.”

– Robert Gensler
