Montclair State University Students Address Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock

August 23, 2017

Sapida Barmaki (Montclair State 2019) and Shahrzad Ahmadi (Montclair State 2021) were invited to share their personal and academic journey stories with members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock (UUCSR) in Manhassett, New York as part of The Initiative's New Student Orientation program.

Sapida and Shahrzad received their invitation from UUCSR congregant, New Student Orientation program host and The Initiative board member Latifa Woodhouse and her husband Colin Woodhouse, both active members of UUSCR and its committees. After addressing the full congregation, Sapida and Shahrzad were invited to speak to the UUCSR Committee on Defying Hate. Both Sapida and Shahrzad were made honorary members of the committee!

Demonstrating The Initiative's core values of Leadership and Service, Sapida and Shahrzad volunteered to return to UUCSR to assist the Social Justice Committee assembling school supplies and backpacks for Long Island children need. The UUCSR Social Justice Committee provides opportunities for education and action on the most pressing moral and social issues of the day. These currently include comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform, prison reform, and anti-hunger efforts.
