Much like the IEAW Founder,
Paula Nirschel, the aftermath of 9/11 stunned
and awakened Alicia Baucom to the oppressed
state of the women of Afghanistan, and she heard
their pleas to be unveiled and become respected
members and leaders of their country. Not
satisfied to be a bystander, Alicia searched for
months for a volunteer opportunity that would
take her to Afghanistan to lend a caring hand to
these determined women. In order to give
productive and efficient service, she needed a
professional degree and, therefore, was
compelled to return to college at a
non-traditional age.

An honors student, Alicia
completed her Bachelor of Social Work and graduated
Cum Laude at Meredith College in 2005. She focused
as much academic work as possible on international
interests including an International Social Work
Study Abroad in Guatemala and two service-learning
trips to Belize. A lifelong believer in service to
others, Alicia has volunteered countless hours and
served in key leadership roles for organizations
such as American Red Cross, CWS/CROP, El Centro
Hispano, and Genesis Transitional Home for Women.
It was through Meredith College that Alicia met two
ambitious IEAW students and had the opportunity to
become involved with the Initiative. Spending time
with these two women allowed Alicia to see first
hand the impact of the IEAW on the professional and
personal development of their lives and what they
aspire to do for their country. Alicia soon became
dedicated to Paula Nirschel’s vision for the women
of Afghanistan.
A native of Arkansas, Alicia and her husband, Bill,
live in the Crystal Coast town of Cape Carteret,
North Carolina with their two feline children, Otis
and Peaches. She enjoys beachcombing, traveling,
cooking, and reading and plans to begin graduate
school in 2008. Alicia’s most recent work includes
social work in the fields of mental health and
hospice.
